Thomas V. Chema is an
American academic administrator and lawyer. Chema was named the 21st
President of Hiram College in 2003 after having served as a voting
member of the Hiram College Board of Trustees for 11 years. Prior to
becoming president of Hiram, Chema spent more than 30 years in business,
government, and law.
Chema is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame and a Cum Laude graduate of Harvard Law School. He began his career with the Cleveland-based law firm of Arter & Hadden in 1971 and became a partner in 1979. He served as Executive Director of the Ohio Lottery Commission and in 1985 was asked to become Chairman of the Ohio Public Utilities Commission, which he served from 1985 to 1989.
In 1990, he was appointed Executive Director of the Gateway Economic Development Corporation and was responsible for overseeing the public/private partnership that led to the financing and construction of Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. In 1994 he founded The Gateway Consultants Group and in recent years has consulted across the country on sports and entertainment-related economic development projects as President and then Chairman of Gateway
Chema is recognized as an expert on energy and telecommunications economics and regulation, infrastructure planning, and developing public/private partnerships. He has published numerous articles on these topics and frequently lectures throughout the country, including assignments at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
Joan M. Mason, RN, BSN, MBA
President & Managing Director
Ms. Mason joined Gateway in January 2002 as a Principal Consultant, and
was subsequently named President & Managing
Director in December
2003. Joan has more than twenty-five years
experience with a diverse background in business planning, health, and
human services. She provides consulting services that include health
care economics, social service, and community development programs. She
is recognized for her expertise in physician-hospital collaborations,
managed care, employer benefits, business planning and clinical
Joan has worked with both for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare systems, physician groups, employers, health plans, third party administrators and networks. Joan earned her undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio and her Masters in Business Administration from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. She has been a speaker and lecturer on such subjects as health care industry trends, specialty network development, managed care, and integrated delivery systems.
Joan is a member of American College of Healthcare Executives and Healthcare Executives of Northeast Ohio. She also serves as Board Chair for the Center for Health Affairs and as an advisor to the Hiram College Nursing Program.
Mary C. Reed, MBA
Mary has twenty-five years in healthcare and is recognized for her expertise in physician-hospital collaboration and integration, clinical service line development, strategic and business planning, and project management. She has worked with both for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare systems as well as with niche managed care organizations. Healthcare positions have included Network Director for Managed Care and New Service Development, Administrator, Behavioral Medicine, and National Director for Corporate Employee Assistance Services.
Mary earned her undergraduate degree in English and Business from Ohio Dominican College, Columbus, Ohio, and her Masters in Business Administration from the University of Dayton. Mary has been published in the field of service line management, healthcare finance reform, and practice operations, and co-authored the Health Administration Press book "Decision-Making for Improved Performance." She has been a speaker on such subjects as clinical institutes, physician-hospital collaboration, value based purchasing, global pricing and patient centered medical homes for such organizations as the Alliance for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, Healthcare Financial Management Association, Medical Group Management Association, American Association of Medical Administrators, and Forum for Healthcare Strategists.
Mary is a member of American College of Healthcare Executives, Healthcare Financial Management Association and Society of Healthcare Strategy and Market Development.
Bill Gill, Senior Consultant, specializes in financial modeling, compensation model development, medical staff planning, market research and analysis, and project management. He has significant expertise in developing pro forma models for feasibility studies, business ventures and clinical service lines, and financial analyses for business, facility and strategic planning.
Bill has also developed productivity-based physician compensation plans for a wide variety of single specialty and multi-specialty groups. In addition, Bill has developed benchmark evaluation models for physician practice and hospital department operational analysis. He has created organizational and physician practice “data dashboards” to assist client hospitals, physicians and practice managers in monitoring ongoing operations and performance. Bill earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science and finance from Cleveland State University.
Bill is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the Healthcare Executives of Northeast Ohio.
